Saturday
I went to the gym to do some speed work – I did 3 miles, but with a lot of discomfort. My left leg is still giving out and the pain is shooting up into my knee and hip. My lower back is really tight and sore and my right heel hurts. I think the back and heel pain are a result of me adjusting my stride to compensate for the pain in my left leg. I’m rolling, I’m kinda sorta stretching – but I’m not sure what else I can do. I’m going to see Richard tomorrow and let him work on me, maybe he can shed some light on this mysterious disappearing leg.
Sunday
Eleven miles scheduled. I got up at 4:15 AM and logged on to weather.com . . . 17 degrees with 20 mph winds. No, I don’t think so. I don’t have gear to keep me warm enough for that weather. I decided to skip my run – I think this might be a good thing to do until I figure out what is going on with my body.
I’m running the Austin Half Marathon this weekend . . . let’s hope I’m fixed by then. I’m a little nervous since I have not run over 9 miles in a long while.
If I were in Amsterdam right now I could get legally high and just run, run, run and not feel pain. Iām insanely jealous of Dooce. Any advice for the running retard?
Sorry to hear the body is givin you trouble. I’m sure Richard can fix you up.
Getting high and feeling no pain is just masking the problem.
I hope you figure out what the root of the pain is.
4:15am…..damn. I’m happy if i’m up by 7am on the weekends to get my runs in.
Hope your legs feel better soon!
Sorry to hear about your running pains, I hope they clear up soon. I’m heading to the treadmill for an 11 mile run today…boring…but it’s even way too cold in Georgia to run outside! Where did our global warming go?
Heh heh heh, my nefarious plan is working! Soon Susan will be a couch potato and then the world is mine. Or something like that.
Sorry about your pain, I hope you are good to go for Austin. Oh, and as far as Kate and I not walking, it was a bit chilly and we don’t have that much warm gear to wear either. So, your excuse is our excuse. But we are going for the eight tonight, even if we have to wear ski jackets and pants to do so!!
I have a 1/2 in two weeks and haven’t run much due to injury either.
Good luck Susan, hopefully your leg gets better soon.
Argh. Injuries suck. Just take it easy and don’t push through it (and maybe ask Dooce to get you some pot?)…and as far as the 1/2…just go and there and do what you can, but again…be careful, eh?
I was in Dallas this weekend. I no longer miss Dallas the city just Dallas the Stars.
Hee Hee. You guys are too funny . . . Just to set the record straight . . . a martini high is about as high as I ever actually get
Who’s this “Richard” person and why don’t I know him?!?!
Take it easy Susan… you might have to skip the 1/2 and get healed up. More important to have a healthy Susan than to complete another 1/2.
Oh no!!! Hope you feel better soon. You did the right thing by skipping on the long run. Man, it’s cold down there!!!
Not to discourage you, but you might want to skip that half. That leg should really get resolved before you race, especially if its a joint problem. You don’t want to be out of it for good…
dude, seriously reconsider the half. there’s still a bunch of days… but, ‘disappearing leg syndrome’ is an automatic placement on the DL.
Susan, you sound like you have some very tight muscles that are affecting your hamstrings and calves. Be cautious about running the half. Pain is a wonderful thing, it tells you something is going on. Discomfort is one thing, pain is another. That being said I have raced with a concussion (twice), another race 2 weeks after breaking 6 ribs, pulled hamstring and a dislocated shoulder. It can be done but you should be very careful about it.
I find running on the treadmill not to be good for me. I always hurt after it and will run in about any weather condition to avoid the dreadmill. It aggravates my ITB and heals when I run on them.
Think about what is right for you this weekend and be comfortable with your choice.
Good luck!
You need some good massage to find the triggers in your muscles and release all those tight spots. I hope Richard is up to it.
Advise? Yeah, don’t check the weather channel before heading out for a run.
Personally, I’d bag the half. No sense running injured and undertrained.
Can I mention too that I like the new blog, but don’t care for the comment section; 1) there aren’t any profile photos, 2) when you click on a person’s link you get a shrunk down version of their blog and 3) there’s no back arrow.
You crack me up! Hope you feel better before the run. And my guess is, if you were high while running, you’d end up stopping on the course a few times to eat — a fast food place here, a fast food place there. Or is that just me?
Zeke, I miss everyone’s pictures too . . . that is the only thing I miss about blogger.
I feel your pain…quite literally. I’m afraid I’m inclined to side with Bolder on this one. You could mess it up even more if you keep running on it. I backed out of a HM last week…and we only have a couple per year up this way…so it really broke my heart. I just couldn’t imagine running through the pain. Go easy on it until you figure out what’s going on.
PLay dress-up with the dog…that should distract you:)
Please, can I see “richard” too?? I don’t care what he does, I want him.
That is some serious cold. Good luck with the aches and pains. you know my solution: hot yoga, yeah baby! but it doesn’t come with “richard” so I don’t know.
Hope you kick austin’s ass.
I am sure that you will run a great half marathon because during the big day you forget all the troubles. Can’t wait to read the report. Good luck.
So you are going to get Richard to work on your body on Valentines Day? Hmmm….
advice? skip the half marathon so you don’t end up with something worse. go to austin… but turn into lake austin spa instead. me thinks you’re in need of some serious pampering and those pontoon bikes are so cool.
Iliketoast will pay for it, i’m sure.
I agree with most of the people above, scrap the race and get your body sorted. IHateToast’s idea sounds pretty good. I think Kurt is on the money. Your symptoms sound like some serious back or core abdominal muscle problems leading to instability and referred pain to other parts of the body. All of my past hamstring problems were related to a lower back defect and were solved through flexibility and strengthening exercises. Take Kurt’s advice, listen to your body and take the pain as a warning that something is not right.
Good luck on the Half this weekend. It’s supposed to warm up before then!
The upcoming 1/2 isn’t that important to you is it? If it was just supposed to be for a training run, skip it. It is better to get this issue resolved instead of pushing the issue and possibly shutting down the running for months (ah – yeah I am very familiar with this!) Hope Massoman helps!
Yeah, if Richard doesn’t work his magic, then I think I’d opt for skipping the race, too. See how you feel, but there are more races where that one came from! That being said, I didn’t listen when people gave me the same advice in October…(and look where that got me.)
many many good lucks this weekend!
Mmmmm… better to heal it than to hurt it more. That’s the better option in the long run, IMHO. Good luck in whatever you do…
Sounds like you need a doctor, a massage and some rest. I guess that halucinagen that you mention wouldn’t hurt either. Hope you don’t hurt yourself this weekend.
Benny
I hope you feel better in time for the half Susan. This Richard guy sounds good, perhaps he could fly over here š
Aww! I hope you feel better! See how you fair this week in the runs that you do (if any). Maybe the pain will subsist in time for the half marathon this weekend. There’s a lot that could happen in a week! Good & bad, mind you. I’m hoping for the former and not the latter for ya!
You might not be able to do drugs legally, but have you considered doing them illegally?
Not that I would condone that kind of behaviour of course.
Find that leg Susan. It will come in handy for the half marathon.
Ouch. š That lower leg nerve weirdness is the worst. Your situation sound similar to mine that I had in my first year. The bad news is mine ended up being a buldged disc in my lower back. The good news is that it went away with a little downtime. I hope your makes a speedy recovery much the same!
Hope your 1/2 marathon went well. I can’t wait to read your race report! š
I’m not going to offer any medical advice, cause I’m not a doctor, I just play one on TV. Plus, I know you won’t listen anyway.
I do hope the massage helps. And the skipping work. And the party with Kenza. And the chocolate I know you’re going to eat. š
Geez! I didn’t think it ever got that cold in Texas! I hope R can solve all your aches and pains, if chocolate alone cannot.
You’re going to do AWESOME this weekend!
Happy VD!
Don’t force yourself, think of recovering and enjoying!
I swear that when winter hits, the injuries start. Ever since December, I have been having back problems, and knee problems…WTF? I hope that your disappearing leg issues get resolved. Hang in there. (And good luck in Austin this weekend!!)
Your pictures are great.
Hello and congratulations!
I like your website alot…its lots of fun… you have to help me out with mine…
Hey man…sorry I missed the party.
