And I Owe it All to Those I Left Behind

in Birds in our Backyard

I love the taper. I am so loving not running every day. Based on other blogs I’m reading I think I’m the only runner that loves the taper. Who ever thought not running would be so wonderful. Yes, yes, you can call me lazy.

Speaking of laziness – I’ve been unemployed, or rather self-employed, for over a month now. And I do have more time, and now that it’s taper time – I have even more time. Which in turn, makes my life boring. Boring in a way that I know everybody wishes they could be bored. It’s a tough problem to have – so shoot me. I however have had a difficult time of organizing my time. And for some reason, now that it’s my time and not an employers and I’m doing the things that I love to do – the time flies by. Reading Go Fug Yourself and wathcing baby birds is exciting. Also, now that I’m not paid to blog – I haven’t been doing as much of it lately – which I fully intend to change just as soon as I can figure out what to do when. I’ll get right on that just as soon as pool season is over.

Okay, so once again I digress – let’s get to the running part. I ran fartleks on Tuesday for 30 minutes with a ten-minute warm up and cool down. I did nothing Wednesday or Thursday and I am going to swim today for some cross training. I might run for 30 minutes easy – maybe, I’m not quite sure yet. Tomorrow is an easy eight-mile run – with much emphasis on the easy.

One final thought: UNEMPLOYMENT + SWEAT PANTS + REFRIDGERATOR = FAT RUNNER SUSAN.

Sometimes I dream about a time/place where I could just do nothing. Have no plan, no responsibility, lots of money and nothing pending. Then she elbows me in the ribs.

It looks like you have a ‘gator in there!

Facing the same issues with too much time on my hands.

I run every other day – would you considering tapering as my way of life?

5 jank May 26, 2006 at 9:01 am

LOL about the “paid to blog” bit.

Continue to enjoy while the rest of us working stiffs grind our teeth in envy!

6 Kurt May 26, 2006 at 9:03 am

have fun on the taper. relax the hard work and rest will pay off when you blow away your marathon.

I see more bird porn is posted again! Enjoy the long weekend!

Long live the taper!!!

(i got my blog back)

Here’s my tip: ditch the sweats. I’ve discovered that loose and comfy sweats leads to eating more and more. Put on your tightest jeans – it’ll remind you to watch the intake levels!

i love a good taper.

i’m thinking all of 2007 would make a good one.

especially if i get lost tapering, and don’t pick an event for 2008…

your bird pics are freaking me out. maybe my screen is too high resolution. are they dead? are they sleeping? are they ok?

i can’t tell.

10 a.maria May 26, 2006 at 10:54 am

hells yeah taper! bring it!

and holy heat wave batman… looks like its 96 where you are. i should stop complaining about KC heat!

11 runningrabbit May 26, 2006 at 11:04 am

Is it appropriate to show my students these things you keep referring to as “birds?”

BTW…I love the taper too!

12 Yvonne May 26, 2006 at 11:21 am

i’m one of those who hate the taper. makes me too antsy, and I always get sick. but ENJOY!

13 Donald May 26, 2006 at 11:48 am

You could create a separate blog for bird-watchers and post these pics there, too. That would give you something else to do, and bird people would love it.

They have bird blogs, right?

I can only take so much of slowing down too. I am one of those people that has to be busy! Glad to see the baby birdies are doing well.

“As soon as pool season is over.” I love it. Enjoy your taper.

16 The Devil May 26, 2006 at 1:14 pm

I am the Queen of Taper I guess. Oh and, LAZY!!

17 The Devil May 26, 2006 at 1:21 pm

Oh yeah, and isn’t Go Fug Yourself the best website ever!!!

18 Cliff May 26, 2006 at 1:23 pm

19 Rob May 26, 2006 at 2:20 pm

So you’re saying we have to pay you to blog more? I like tapering and laziness as well.

20 21stCenturyMom May 26, 2006 at 3:10 pm

Fat and Happy is my forever goal. I love that.

I’m sure you are not fat and I am also sure you’re going to have a great marathon.

Those birds are just like me – all mouth!

21 david May 26, 2006 at 7:52 pm

Dang Girl! You’ve put in 426 miles already this year? You’re the buff pool hotty in my book.

22 Nicole May 26, 2006 at 7:59 pm

I love the taper – I actually look forward to the taper.
YOu know I was off for a month between jobs and I got so bored because I was disorganized but now that I’m back at work I wish I had time off. I just can’t win – two more weeks and I get a vacation day though – yeah!

23 wobbly man May 26, 2006 at 8:54 pm

Those birds are getting uglier by the day – perhaps they are going to turn into Aliens and you will be Ripley saving the world (in between pool visits that is)

24 Jen_runs May 26, 2006 at 9:30 pm

LOL. Wobbly Man really is a much nicer fella than his last comment suggests ;-)

I’m a big fan of the taper too. Enjoy your weekend!

25 Liv May 26, 2006 at 10:33 pm

At least “fat” Runner Susan (yeah, right!) will always look a gazillion times better than her baby birds.

26 iliketoast May 27, 2006 at 1:19 am

aint no caper better than a taper!

i fug’n found that site the other day … disturbing, but it draws you in at the same time …. strange.

27 ihateToast May 27, 2006 at 4:50 am

i only don’t like the taper when it happens when i’m supposed to be running (as in when i’m ill or have house guests). i smell a monster run for you in Sandy Eggos.
looks like tara reid’s been tapering in the marathon of style.

28 Dawn (aka Pink Lady) May 27, 2006 at 11:36 am

Interesting photo….

Enjoy your taper. :-)

29 air-run May 27, 2006 at 2:56 pm

I know a guy who has a line about his marathons that everyone always laughs at – it goes like this – “In my marathons I start really slow and then taper from there”. Anyway, so he enjoys a good taper as well.

30 Anne May 27, 2006 at 6:30 pm

Downside of the taper is you don’t burn as many calories. But don’t let that stop you from eating an extra slice with us on Saturday. Then, it’s justified!

31 ewen May 28, 2006 at 3:25 am

Don’t think about the fridge too much on Sunday Susan.

I’m jealous of the three week taper that marathoners get! Enjoy it. :)

32 Jack May 28, 2006 at 8:22 am

I find tapering enjoyable, it give me more time to plan my next race, fix things around the house, get to know my wife again, put in some overtime at work,…

33 Julie May 28, 2006 at 9:28 am

Hurray for the taper. Right now, I am enjoying saying that I am officially tapering. I ran my last 20 mile run yesterday and woke up stiff & so sore. I’ll be going batty the week before Grandma’s…for now, I am going to enjoy it for awhile. I am glad that you are enjoying yours.

34 Sarah Elaine May 28, 2006 at 12:42 pm

Enjoy that taper… And let’s not be too hard on ourselves now, eh?

35 Tammy May 28, 2006 at 9:08 pm

I love the taper.. I get to be lazy guilt-free! I do need ‘structure’ though. If I don’t have a lot to do, I end up doing nothing. It’s a strange phenomena (sp?), just another part of my adorable personality I guess :)

36 jdysart May 29, 2006 at 10:10 pm

I too am a fan of the taper! The taper is the best part of the training b/c you’re nearly done. So you’re not lazy; you’re just using common sense.

37 Thomas May 30, 2006 at 5:51 am

Looks like life is treating you well all of a sudden.

Where did you find all those taper fans? I’ve never met a runner who likes it!
