That Thing I Do I Can’t Do No More

If you haven’t noticed, things in my world are busy lately, hence my lack of commenting and sporadic posting. I’ve gone from disassembling my vacuum out of boredom to gleefully doing what I love best: spending time with my iMac. My tongue is so happy. Those of you who know me well knew that I could not stay unemployed very long. Go ahead, laugh now or forever hold your peace.

For a while now, my sister Amy and I have been toying around with the idea of starting our own web design business. Finally, it’s real. We did it. Not only did we do it, it’s growing faster than we imagined. This, of course, makes a previously bored Susan a monetarily happy Susan. Call me superficial. I don’t care. I like having money. If you have a moment stop by and check out our site: www.sumydesigns.com. It’s in a transitional stage, but let us know what you think. Honest opinion givers need only apply.

This brings me to another subject. You know that thing I do for all of you – that thing I love called designing your blog mastheads for free. I can’t do it anymore. Don’t get me wrong. I loved doing it and I love visiting the blogs I’ve designed for to see how they capture each of your personal style and spirit. It really brings joy to my heart. But the requests are getting more frequent, and now that it’s my job to design, I just can’t do it for free any longer. I’ve spent too much of my own money purchasing images and it’s not fair to my sister or our new business to take away time and skill that could be used to grow our new company. (Besides, my sister was threatening to bitch slap me if I didn’t stop – she can be mean that way.) But I hope I’ve come up with a solution, we do have ready-to-order mastheads available on our site – reasonably priced I might add at only $20 per masthead. Please don’t hate me, it’s nothing personal, it’s just that without an income I can’t purchase that new fall wardrobe for Rowdy.

Susan,
If I buy a header can you install it for me? And can I choose my color?
Todd

2 Amy August 31, 2006 at 9:44 am

The answer to that is maybe. If you buy one of the ready-to-use headers you can pick the color of your title, but we can also create a custom header for you…it’s just more expensive for the custom header. As for installation, if you don’t mind giving me or Susan your username and password for blogger, we can put it up for you.

I didn’t realize you did it for free in the first place – otherwise I would have bugged you months ago…

If you have a marketable skill, use it baby! Good luck with the business. I’ll go check out the website now.

13 IHateToast August 31, 2006 at 2:33 pm

but will you still e-lick our computers for free?

14 21stCenturyMom August 31, 2006 at 2:37 pm

You mean people asked you to do that for free??!?!!! Too bad I’m not the type to do that or I’d have a much nicer header.

Congrats on your new business. Maybe after my ‘new bike’ fund is complete I’ll start a ‘new masthead’ fund.

Hey Susan. I’m really impressed with your new business venture. Sounds like an awesome, fun way to utilize your talents and make a living. I’m seriously going to think about signing up, because, as you may have noticed, my blog design sux ass, and I really think it lets down what I’m really into blogging for – my writing. I’ll take a look at your site and let you know. Provided I don’t go into labor shortly that is. Thanks =)

PS – I linked to your new site in case any of my readers need your expertise…

I really like the website, and also some of the others you’ve designed, but mostly the pickler one made me laugh.

congrats on the business!

Ditto all the congrats posts.

Awesome idea! You are doing something that you love. That’s important.

22 david August 31, 2006 at 5:48 pm

… nor can you afford that Prada satchel you envy so I want to thank you for your beta testing your skills on my masthead a year ago. I never want to change it.
I saw your website a week or two ago when I followed some strands off your blog. I don’t know how I got there but I thought, “Hmmmn; Susan has not told us about this.”
Good luck. You’ll do well.

Does Amy run too? Maybe I’ve seen her running down an Indiana road.

24 Amy August 31, 2006 at 7:11 pm

I love your work and your site and tried to send a message via the ‘contact us’ form, but it didn’t go through….page cannot be displayed error.
I would love to commission a masthead for my blog (marathons, gnomes, and motorcycles) if you can help me set it up.
She’s right. Never do artwork for free! Your work is worth something!

31 jank August 31, 2006 at 10:13 pm

The new business is absolutely a great idea! Best of luck…

32 Amy September 1, 2006 at 5:46 am

Sorry about the contact form error. It has been fixed, you can try it again.

33 Thomas September 1, 2006 at 7:45 am

I’m sure nobody would like seeing Rowdy without the lastest fashion for the fall season.

34 txrunnergirl September 1, 2006 at 11:17 am

Wow, congrats on the new business! If I new you were doing the mastheads for free to begin with, I would have asked for one. :-) Actually, $20 is a fair price, so I may be getting one soon! Best of luck!

35 Rob September 2, 2006 at 12:16 am

I’ll be contacting you soon about a custom header as soon as I get some extra money that I can hide from my wife. I would love to support your new wardrobe for Rowdy and it is almost my 1 year blogger anniversary. I need a change. I’ll start with a header, or masthead first.

36 Rose September 2, 2006 at 8:11 am

Your business site rocks! Congratulations of the new venture – I suspect you will be busier and happier than ever. Just make sure you keep time in your schedule for running!

37 buckeyerunner September 2, 2006 at 8:11 am

I could never hate you!! I really scored getting my header way back when – A RunnerSusan original! I will check out your site and see what strikes my fancy!

Congrats, and I hope that your new venture is wildly successful!

38 SD September 2, 2006 at 12:57 pm

Good for you Susan. Best of luck in luck in your commercial venture. Here is to no longer getting bitch slapped for giving it away free..

39 MKJ September 3, 2006 at 12:20 pm

Wow, the web sites are great! I love your graphics. What graphics program do you use? I have Fireworks, but I am not gifted with graphics and they make a huuuge difference!
Good job,
MJ

40 janet September 10, 2006 at 11:40 am

i’m really impressed and awed that you’re doing this. Real gutsy move, at least from my perspective. It’s something i’ve always wanted to do but haven’t yet… I think you’ll do great and that you’re already successful just by trying it out! Personally, I have seen better web design sites BUT I have also seen much, much worse (the “better” sites attract a much different client base like big corporate, etc.). There is always a place in the market though because you’ll attract the type of clients that will want business from you (mainly it seems, small mom and pop shops and bloggers!) and it’s your job to give them something they can be happy about… which is what you do! If the purpose is to make the client happy, then that’s all you need and you’ve suceeded. Way to go. I think you’ll do excellent w/ your business. Anyway, that’s just my honest two cents from a graphic designer..

41 janet September 10, 2006 at 11:43 am

oops. One more thing. I love your democrat website in your portfolio section. Looks awesome. Does this in any way reflect the viewpoints of you and your sister. :)
