I’ve got a half coming up on May 5th – and unfortunately, just finishing is my goal. I should be ashamed of myself and this should push me to do more, right?
I’m not doing the daily training thing very well. I’m running twice a week, if that. I’m not having trouble with the distance, which seems completely inappropriate. Is it wrong to want the runs to be hard so I’ll train more out of sheer panic?
Running is supposed to be fun. Finishing is the only goal I’ve ever had. I’m not going to win anything, and I’m OK with that. I don’t train every day, either.
The Mini is one of the greatest races I’ve ever participated in. I’ll be lucky to finish in under 2.5 hours. Get your brain out the way and enjoy it.
Having a goal and getting out there even minimally still exeeds expectations of the sedentary majority.
Fear is only one kind of motivator. There are others 🙂
Perhaps you should change the name of your blog to “Stationary Susan.”

Enjoying will be the goal 😀
I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. I can’t seem to find the joy of disciplined training and yet, I have an event on May 6. Then I get depressed thinking about my crapy performance.
There is only one thing to do – let it go. You know you’ll finish so just do that. Just show up and finish and then figure out how you feel about it. That’s what I’m doing, anyhow.
That having been said – the 1/2 marathon is a fantastic race. Long enough to constitute a challenge but short enough to be ‘doable’ even if you haven’t trained. I did my last 2 severely undertrained and it was okay! In fact, I felt good at the end.
I’m going against the grain here, but I think you’d be happier with some training, no? Let the short-term goal of running *three* times a week inspire you to push a little:) Run, Susan, Run.
Bad Bad Susan.
Maybe you need something different from just running. Join Karrie at the dark side. You’ve got the bike(s), you’ve got the legs… how about Speedos?
Now listen here my dear – it’s no good whingeing about not having the motivation.
If sweet talk, encouragement, discipline, drive and determination – I suggest you ask somebody close to you to give yourself a kick up the backside!! That’ll soon get you out and training.
And when times are bad and you feel low on confidence just spare a thought for this kiddie here – I’ve got an Olympic Gold medal to win.
Keep on tapering.
Ron
The desire is there you’ll get it done
Not only will you finish but you will finish strong. No doubt you will have time to have a meal, several drinks and a bout of shopping before I get in. My goals: not to get picked up by the bus, not to puke, cry, or throw myself down on the ground.
You’ll finish! You have a good background as a runner, so you could get by on two runs a week, although your time for the half could be slower than you hope for. I’m paniced into training because I don’t want my next half to hurt. I don’t like hurt.
I’ve got a full on May 6th and have been waffling about doing it-so I know how you feel.
