I’ve entered myself into the NYC Marathon Lottery. And since my chances of getting in are only 50%, I think I should have a back up marathon just in case. And so should Amy. Like maybe Vegas.
I also need a plan. I haven’t done any structured running in a while and I’m promising myself that I will stick to a plan. I’m not very good at sticking to a plan; I like to change it along the way. And by change I mean finding every possible way to not run so I can race completely untrained. Then whine and mope because I’m not fast.

So are you saying that’s not a legitimate training plan? Cause I have employed it many times.
I heard that the Las Vegas marathon was horrible (actually I read it here http://www.marathonguide.com/races/racedetails.cfm?MIDD=2377071202 ). They charge you the standard $90 and give you a cotton T-shirt. They promise the Blue Man Crew at the start and they are gone the second the elite runners cross the pads.
I recommend San Diego – way more fun. And there’s always San Francisco but it is hilly. And last, but not least, is the Fly Pig in Cincinnati because they have the best logo of all.
i entered the st. george lottery. how about that one? there’s nothing better than 26.2 downhill miles!
Sounds like a good plan, Susan. Crossing my fingers for you to do NYC.
If you think I’m going to enter my name into a marathon with a guaranteed entry, you are INSANE. I’ll definitely go to Vegas, though, and cheer you on from behind the craps table.
I hope you don’t make it in NY and opt for Vegas instead. Hint, Hint!
LOL. That’s a plan! Just pick one or the other!
It would be fabulous if you come for NYC. We’ll have to call a RBF meetup. I won’t be running, but I’ve volunteered in various capacities over the years and my best friend is doing the race. So I’ll definitely be there.
I hope we get into NYC, but if not, Vegas sounds like a pretty good backup. You might want to check the course … starts out on the strip, but then you run the rest of the way in the desert!
I was looking at other options too and came up with Vegas, Philly, and Memphis.
To improve your chances of getting a place at NYC, you’ll need to tell everyone you know that you won’t train for it. Then by the Knollie Karma that has afflicted your sister you’ll get that place.
NYC ….. awesome
Running dressed as Elvis …. awesome
ok I’m having a bet each way
Just in case you like California and the possibility of a spring-like finish, CIM (California International Marathon) is a nice small marathon. The course is rolling but net-down hill.
Check it out at: http://www.runcim.org
Hey, that’s how I train.
BTW, I made it into NYC the 1st time I tried, so you never know! Good luck!
Memphis is flat, has great support, and Tunica is close by.
Greetings Susan!
I know I have been out of pocket a whole whole bunch BUT I do keep up on the wonderful world of susan via your blog.
Luv ya lots!

Good luck! I’m running my first half mary in august and my first full marathon in march.
wait…are you saying whining and moping isn’t a plan???
Somehow I feel responsible and guilty. Great. It fits right into my current plan.
NYC’s great. TO make sure you hit the lottery, enter another marathon 2 weeks before…
