The training begins – NYCM Day 1

in New York Marathon 2007,Weight Lifting

Today I lifted upper body weights with my coach/friend Cindy. Bench. Triceps. Curls. Abs. It’s been a long time since I’ve done any lifting so I’m hoping to be delightfully sore tomorrow. My arms are even shaky as I type this.

Since I don’t officially start my New York Marathon training schedule until July, I thought I’d just do the first two weeks of the plan and then start it over again.

Tomorrow is speed work – 8 x 400 at 6AM. Yay. It will be hell, but it won’t take that long. I’m not sure how fast I’m supposed to run them, but I guess it will be as fast as my butt will make it around the track.

I’m going to need new shoes soon. Should I just buy one pair now and another later, or should I buy two pairs now and rotate? Will that get me through the marathon in November?

I’m a big fan of the rotation method! But I think you are supposed to not rotate two new pairs of the same shoes (otherwise they would wear exactly the same and the benefit of rotation would be lost). But really, I am sort of talking out my back side.

I have no idea about the shoes. I have a really bad habit of waiting until I have shin splints and really need the new shoes before I buy them!

Two pairs. Break both of them in early.

Besides, it’s more fun to shop that way.

If you later feel you should have got a pair at a later stage, you can shop again.

It’s all that K logic.

Your asking us amatures about shoe shopping? I’m flattered.

I think the rationale behind buying 2 pair and rotating them is that the cushioning has time to refill with air and get uncompressed in between runs. That’s the theory, anyhow. I generally wear one pair until my knees start to hurt and then I get a new pair. I’m not sure it really matters. Sorry – no help here!

Rotating two pair of shoes should get you through your marathon. I did a quick guesstimate and you should even have some additional use after the marathon – some.

Have fun w/speed work tomorrow morning. Just remember – you are strong Runner Susan – do not let the track defeat you!!!

You know what shoes you want?
Buy 2 pairs.
Wear one twice as many training miles as the other.
Wear the fresher one in New York.

yeah, what David said.

wah wah – I hope I can join you in the NYC training, but it’s looking less and less likely with every limping step I take…

Two shoes now, rotate them. Then, buy a fresh pair three weeks before the marathon and break them in to use for the marathon. Trust me, you can never have too many pairs of shoes.

i completely disagree with all those people telling you to buy two pairs. NORMAL people would buy two pairs. you are not in that category. Buy three. just because you can.

8 x 400 at 6am! That is scary. I’d say a little quicker than 5k pace would be plenty. 2 minutes per 400? Don’t do the first one too fast Susan!
