Okay. I’m out of shape. Clearly, I have a lot of work ahead of me. So here’s how the speed work went:
Lap 1 – 2:12
Lap 2 – 2:11
Lap 3 – 1:58
Lap 4 – 2:33
I started walking on the last lap after my left lung fell out. I then walked laps 5-8 at a pace that would ensure I could keep my right lung.
That’s my problem – when I get winded I slow down. Or rather, shut down. I’ve gotten out of the habit of pushing myself. I need to start channeling my old Chicago training mojo. I know I can do this. I know I can run a marathon faster than 4:57.
Run your laps at a pace so that you can sustain all 8. Doesn’t make sense for you to be out of speed work so long(?) and then come back expecting to run the same 400s. It will come back to you 🙂
You descended 1 – 3. That’s good!
What do you do in between laps? That’s the part I need to find out about. Do you do 1 fast lap followed by 1 recovery lap at the same distance?
Ya, I’m not a fan of speed work either.
i know you can run it faster than 4:56, too.
keep it up, sooze!
Keep doing them Susan. Pain is temporary.
No need to make it unbearable though. Next time, stay at 2:12s and try and do the 8. Keep a strict recovery time – a 2 minute walk should be enough.
I hope you picked up your lung. You will need it for the next session 😉
Seriously, Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither will Speedy Susan be. But it was & you will be too 🙂
How much rest between them???
I can’t do 400s anymore. All I can do is think about how much easier this was when I was in high school. If I were to do 400s, they’d have to be NOT on a track. Every step I take is “I’m old I’m fat I’m old I’m fat…” I think I end on fat.
ewen, you dork!
The mojo is coming back! It will, it will. Try them slower dear, then you will kick the all out. Begin with 8. Try finishing the 400’s in 2:30. Really, this way you will finish 6-8 of them and next time you can try 10. Then begin taking off 10 seconds each one. Each spring I begin 800’s and mile repeats. They are ALWAYS slower than when I left off the previous season. Work up to it, it will come 🙂
You know you’re doing speedwork right when at least one of your lungs fall out.
