I’ve felt great everyday since the marathon. I buzzed around NY the day after the marathon like I lived there. I don’t know why I feel so much better this time around than after other marathons. Maybe it’s that thing called “training” I did. I’m still curious though about the cramps in my quads after mile 18.
Could it be?
- Walking too much the day before
- Allergy medicine I took the morning of
- My longest training run only being 20 miles
- Weaving in-and-out of people
- All of these things
- Tell me your secrets! What is the mystery of not cramping?
I’ll take any advice I can get. I’m inspired and I don’t want to lose all this endurance I worked so hard for, so I’m registering for the Austin Marathon this week.
There are many things I need to do to improve my time. The most important change being to focus on my nutrition during training. Eating 200 pieces of Halloween candy the week before a marathon probably isn’t the best race fuel.
Damn, Halloween candy isn’t good race fuel?!?! Are you sure about that?
Hey Susan just a guess here but the downhill stuff (bridges) can trash your quads. I am glad you are feel well, and inspired.
You also beat Katie Holmes by 30 minutes!
Running downhill is hard on the thighs and glutes. The first time I ran the SF Marathon my left glute was in a snit for the entire 2nd half because I ran down a steep hill really fast. You have to resist the temptation to run down hill at super speed to make up for how slow the uphill part was.
That and you have to limit yourself to 100 pieces of Halloween candy the week before.
If there were any downhills early that always does in my quads at the end.
> Walking too much the day before
Duh.
> Allergy medicine I took the morning of
Allergy medications dry you out – as a runner you need hydration. Cramps are caused by lack of hydration. Duh.
> My longest training run only being 20 miles
Eh. Yeah. Need to train. Muscles are like whats up with this new distance.
> Weaving in-and-out of people
Same as above by mile 18 you had run 20 with the weave.
> All of these things
I think you know the answer.
> Tell me your secrets! What is the mystery of not cramping?
One thing that is huge is taking some mineral suppliments along with whatever else you are consuming.
what is candy corn if not conical gu?
i think you’re pumped from the city, miss titty.
i felt great after the lulu (muscle-wise).
i think some marathons just have a vibe, man. yeah, it’s the vibe. the aura. i sense an aura.
i’m going my best janice from the muppets.
Ya know, I went through the same thing last year with MCM. I finally decided it’s due to the muscles being overworked and underpaid. Unfortunately, paying up can only go so much further – drinking and gel-ing on the course. It’s the overworked part that can’t be solved during the run. The muscles just aren’t used to working that hard for that long … and you already know the answer for that … training, ugh!
Hydration foremost. Tired legs prob second. We weaved pretty econimically I thought. Training is whay it is. 20 should be enough when you do it twice.
I haven’t been able to congratulate you on your run, which sounds like a big improvement over the last one. I remembered how badly you wanted to break 5 hours then, so I know how much those 2 seconds must have annoyed you. But it’s an admirable time when you consider all the obstacles.
Salt for the cramps. Gotta be taking it in, with water.
