The marathon that didn’t happen

by Runner Susan on February 25, 2008

in Cowtown Marathon 2008

I had full intentions of running the marathon. I even got my clothes ready and doctored my feet up before I went to bed. Look how cute our clothes are next to each other. Don’t you just want to eat that up. And yes, Kenza’s feet are nearly bigger than mine. She even wrote Runner Susan’s Daughter on her shirt. She’s the best baby ever! And the fastest. She ran the 5k in 30:09, with no training.

And still, I don’t know what to say except when I woke up in the morning I just couldn’t do it. There was no life in me to run a marathon. My ankle is still bothering me, it’s not worse, but it sure isn’t better. I’m really down about it and I think I have the post-marathon blues. I need a new goal (other than Chicago) and I need to start putting in some miles. Today after school Kenza and I are going to run 3 miles together and that makes me so happy I want to cry.

I love, love, LOVE that you are running with your daughter. It makes me want to cry, too. :)

I’m so jealous! I can’t wait until my girls are old enough to run, or at least ride their bikes with me.

4 TriBoomer February 25, 2008 at 3:33 pm

How about hitting the pool?

It’ good for breathing, building endurance, and it’s easy on the feet. You know… swimming is a part of a triathlon.

I’m just sayin’

I do believe that if I had shorts and a sleeveless shirt waiting for me (in February), I would skip the race too. :D
Congrats to Kenza for a race well run.

I think running with your daughter beats a marathon any day.

7 cindylouwho February 25, 2008 at 5:28 pm

I think you both rock!! Go Kenza aka Runner Susan’s Daughter

8 Taryn February 25, 2008 at 5:40 pm

Ummmm… didn’t you just run a marathon like a week ago? Chin up girl!

I think it is so dang awesome that you’re running with your daughter! What an amazing example you’re setting and a fabulous outlet for bonding to boot! Yay!

definitely you have the post m’thon blues. hate that. but it kinda sounds like you might need to give the old ankle a break for a bit. heal up before you add to the injury!

10 Rinus February 25, 2008 at 6:13 pm

Not many runners can run 2 marathons in a week!. I a try have also done 2 marathons will run and that has not succeeded me also. Try a half marathon firstly once and then a marathon and differently once in the Netherlands a marathon will run; -).
Groet Rinus.

Um, you finally sound human which is hardly a bad thing. You’re listening to your body and that’s what’s important. Marathons come and go, but you’ve got your body for life.

Good for you for knowing your limits. We could all be so bright.

12 Jen February 25, 2008 at 8:13 pm

I think it’s perfectly reasonable that you did not want to run yet another marathon this week. Seriously, ouch. I am in pain just thinking of it! Great pics though- good job Kenza. Have fun on your run together and good luck thinking of another goal. :)

13 June February 25, 2008 at 8:47 pm

hey you got farther than i would have! although thats not saying much. ;) I mean I would NEVER EVER EVER even contemplated running 2 marathons in one week. Bah!

dont fret about it. really, it aint nuthin’ but a thing.

Hope the ankle feels mo betta. and soon.

Susan,

You are not beating yourself up about this, are you? I sure hope not. Let’s remember that most people never run one marathon – let alone two in a week. Let’s also remember that running a marathon takes a LOT out of our bodies.

You deserve to be happy about that marathon.

15 mia February 25, 2008 at 9:13 pm

You’re still my hero. Also? I thought you were batshit for doing two in one week. So there you have it.

16 Rich February 25, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Maybe you need a red shirt like Tiger to go with those red shorts.

17 Ewen February 25, 2008 at 11:43 pm

Kenza is flying – and she’s fast – 30:09! She’ll be a good training partner for you Susan.

Maybe you can both train for some 5k races before Chicago? Re-write your 5k PB! The Half-Fast 5k challenge? Still do the long runs, but 5k is probably far enough for Kenza.

Susan you made the right decision. Your daughter did great. Congratulations to Kenza!!

19 Denise "Firefly" February 26, 2008 at 12:27 am

Don’t beat yourself up. Take care of that ankle.

Congrads on your daughter’s awesome finish!

20 iliketoast February 26, 2008 at 6:52 am

Move on, you are going to get them all.

21 fe-lady February 26, 2008 at 12:10 pm

Read “Duel in the Sun”- about Frank Shorter and friends who even at the top of their careers could NOT run marathons well back to back….the human body needs to recover after such things, or you just may face a debilitating injury/illness that will do more than just set you back one race. Be careful and heal and you will come back stronger if you rest adequately.

22 Monica C. February 26, 2008 at 4:16 pm

You should not feel bad at all! You just *did* a marathon!! And before that, you *just* did another one (NYC), as far as I’m concerned! You rock, woman! Better to miss this one than to really suffer a bad injury.

How about a short race? Hey, I’m running in the Big D half marathon in about 5 weeks …! :)

23 Cassie/Tiggs February 26, 2008 at 5:36 pm

Susan- running with your daughter will be just what you need…if Kenza likes to run, I can’t think of anything more fun. I used to run with my dad when I was about her age and it rocked!

24 The Devil February 26, 2008 at 6:12 pm

I am sad cause you didn’t mention how you came and whined to me that morning…hehehehe Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone…

25 IHateToast February 26, 2008 at 7:07 pm

i’m glad you listened to your body. you’ll be glad you gave this one a rest. you’re healing.

i know you have to listen hard. your body is often telling us “va va va voom, sailor” but under all that sass is a little “lemme rest. so tie tie.”

26 Teacherwoman February 26, 2008 at 10:01 pm

I love being about to run with my Mom (and my Dad) even though they are faster and more experienced then me. It’s a great way for us to bond, and I wouldn’t give it up for anything!

27 Laura Lohr : My Beautiful Life February 27, 2008 at 3:56 pm

I still think you are awesome! :) Chin up. You rock.

28 david February 27, 2008 at 9:07 pm

I want Kenza’s blog address. Girl needs to get it on and give you some run for yo money.

Go Kenza!

As for you … find something and sign up but rest a little. You did a half and full. That’s a load of ankle biting by injury bugs.

29 CarolinaMama February 27, 2008 at 10:40 pm

Yeaa Kenza! And you two enjoy your run(s) together! That’s awesome.

30 Steve Stenzel February 28, 2008 at 1:31 pm

What a speedy little one! I hope you enjoyed the run with her!

31 P.O.M. February 29, 2008 at 12:42 am

Uhm… dork – you are totally not a loser for not running.

Kenza is a superstar! That’s awesome that you run together!

32 Jen_runs March 2, 2008 at 5:56 am
