It’s no secret that Michael and I love some good wine in this house, so much in fact that we built in a small wine closet cellar in one of the rooms. And as we were drinking a bottle of an Australian blend last night, it occurred to me that I haven’t been sharing with you the wines we love. So Internet, I think I’m going to start listing them more often, or just often since I haven’t done it at all yet. I’m so generous with the world, sometimes I amaze myself.
My all time favoritist wine ever – Rocket Science – 2005 Proprietary Red – Caldwell Vineyards – California – $40.00 – it’s plush, big, bold and makes me think naughty things. You’ll love it too.
I have to say; Australians are damn good at blending wine. I’ve been drinking Australian wines for a while now and this cheapy one took me by surprise – 2005 Elderton Tantalus – Shiraz Cabernet Malbec Merlot – Barossa Valley – only $14.99. Honestly, I was expecting crap, but it turned out to be a delicious everyday table wine.
You want to know the other thing I love that a lot of Australian vineyards are doing? Screw tops. BEST. IDEA. EVER.

I found one you should love. It’s called Screw Kappa Napa (merlot). (obviously with a screw top)
It’s a very spunky wine. Pretty cheap at $12.99. Can’t beat the name either.
LOL @ the screw tops. I’m not much of a wine drinker, but picked up several bottles not too long ago for a small get together I was having. I probably paid anywhere from $12 to $20 per bottle for the 3 or 4 bottles I picked up – so not bottom of the barrel, but obviously not premium wine, either.
I was MORTIFIED when I went to open a bottle and realized that it had a screw top. I was thinking, “Oh.My.Gosh., I am about to serve Ripple to my guests, and they are all already watching me open this bottle.” I was ready to crawl under my sink, when someone mercifully announced how much she loved the new screw tops on all of the wines…
Damn you!
The more your mob learn of these things the more we send away and the less there is here and more expensive it becomes.
Reason #25 to immigrate
Good wine isn’t rocket science. Try the Mount Majura Vineyard’s 2002 Pinot Noir. Sadly, you’ll need a corkscrew.
Oh Susan, if you love wine then you HAVE to do the Marathon du Medoc in France. It winds its way through the chateaux of Bordeaux and features 22 wine tastings DURING the race! My husband and I ran it last year and had an absolute blast.
Rocket Science? What a name for wine.
You’ll have to try the 2003 Screwtopuluso.
LOVE me some Australian wines, especially a Shiraz.
However, I would NEVER pay $40 for a bottle of wine unless I just won the lottery, and then I might be skeptical.
I will have to pass on this one. Next! :O)
Did someone say “screw” tops?
australia sends its best out, too. not really nice of them.
what about the peeps here?
so why don’t you do a clare valley tour?
Screw tops are god’s gift: 1) preserve the wine much better 2) eliminates corkage 3) crazy convenient. Wine snobs need to get over their distain of them asap.
I must try Rocket Science asap! Thanks for the tips!
I’m all about the screw tops too. Especially great when you’re traveling and can’t find a freakin’ wine opener to save your life.
