Another doctor appointment, another dollar and more bad news. I have a stress fracture with strict instructions for no running and no weights for six weeks. I asked Dr. Joey what I could do and his response was “A whole lot of nothing!”
I’m going to try and make the best of things.Β I think I’ll take some time off, enjoy the weather, eat like a pig and keep working on that Do-It-Yourself Liposuction kit. And, in about six weeks when I’ve sucked the entire energy source out of my body, it should be time to start training for the Chicago Marathon.
I hope I don’t lose too much strength. Or get too fat.
Oh what a bummer. Does this explain the cankle?
Dr. Joey forgot about yoga and core conditioning. Surely situps and stretching and seated upper body work won’t hurt your cankle.
Ditto on upper body work (abs, arms, chest, back). This is a good chance to do some serious muscle toning. I would argue you could even get away with a majority of leg work too.
Can you do swimming? It doesn’t seem like that would be stressful on your ankle.
Hang in there, Susan. Remain calm.
he was good with swimming and upper and core . . . but that translated into a whole lotta nothing to me.
Oh sheesh, I’m sorry but I am glad that you finally checked it out. It sure was looking bad.
Hey! We’re on the same plan again! Except I have no injury. I am just being a slacker. And I too have Chicago training to prep for. I will spend my running time looking for that last available $99/night hotel room in downtown Chicago, the best pizza and coldest beer.
Woo hoo.
i would have kicked the doctor in the shins
I’m so sorry! What a big, fat drag. What about stationary biking? That’s one way to keep your cardio fitness up (and burn off the martinis and enchiladas).
You could even cycle with one leg, depending on how much you hate yourself.
Glad that the cankle actually had a reason, although the stress fracture part sucks big-time!
I feel for you! What a bummer.
Good thing you didn’t run that last marathon!!!
Swimming – seriously – it’s SO good for keeping up fitness and in my experience it really does help you run faster. Swimming is kind of annoying if you don’t have a background in it, but see if the local Y or other gym-with-pool has a Master’s swim class a few days a week. That way there will be other people swimming endless laps with you – at least that helps me!
Good luck with Chicago – did last year’s historical Chicago marathon and I’m SO not ready to do that course again… π
That f-ing sucks. You really can’t even swim or cycle? I’m determined to make every injured runner I encounter a triathlete…
Hang in there Susan!! Running will be waiting for you when you’re better. π
Suz,
So sorry to hear this news!
Susan, I am SO glad that you went to the doctor to have that ankle checked out. Rest up so you can run with us in Chicago.
you made me laugh again, “Do-it-yourself…”
reminds me of why I stalk you.
anyway, I had stress fractures of the metatarsils 3 years ago in my right foot. I noticed the pain a few weeks after I ran a marathon. Just to let you know, 6 weeks was not enough for me, but then again four bones were fractured. I think the culprit was worn-out shoes, they were a pair of Nikes. I haven’t worn Nikes since. Now I’m a Mizuno fan, Wave Riders.
Now that you aren’t running, I guess we get to hear more about your dogs and vagina! Good luck with the healing process.
sorry to hear about the ankle. Glad you know what the issue is though. Hopefully you will find some non weight bearing exercise that can keep you sane and fit for the next 6 weeks!
ask your doc about pool running or cycling. there are lots of great non-impact ways to keep in shape. who knows, you may turn into a triathlete by the time you can run again. π
Hey Susan
Long time lurker…
So sorry to hear about your stressie. My girlfriend has stress fractures and kept up her fitness doing pool running. If you want to read about it, she’s at http://emruns.wordpress.com
She found that her core strength improved tons and she didn’t lose too much fitness during her downtime.
Good luck with your recovery, and with your training for Chicago.
Well crap.
I agree that you don’t have to put up with a whole lot of nothing. This may be the perfect time to tune up your hip abductors & adductors with open chain types of exercises, core strength, pool running, perhaps graduating to a pool treadmill if you have access to one (Hydroworks is the only type I’m aware of).
In the meantime, keep your spirits up by visiting http://www.despair.com – I’m especially fond of the demotivators π
You can swim and do yoga….
Sorry! The pool training sounds like a good idea. Yoga – very good if you stick to flexibility and core rather than strengthening. You can really put a lot of weight on your ankle when doing some of the strength poses. Total fan of yoga and pilates for improving performance. Both yoga and pilates can be very challenging.
Yoiks!
Heal fast.
i know you don’t like the pool, but really try it.pool running. thwimmink will help your upper body, but poo’ running will help keep your legs ready for when you hit the pavement again.
p.s. i liked your cankle. it’s bodacious.
That sucks! Sorry to hear the bad news. Make the best of your nothing time.
Hey, can you do a video blog of the do it yourself lipo kit?
It’s martini time!
Ouch! Stress fractures are such a upsetting injury. Only thing that heals it is time.
Pool running is an amazing way to keep your fitness level–just want you to feel ready when you start your training for Chicago.
Take care of yourself.
Yikes. That really stinks. I guess all you can really do is relax (no, really relax, not Susan relaxing) and enjoy the martinis.
Get that awesome husband of yours to get one of his bikes set up on a trainer. Boring as hell?? You better believe it! Sweat like a freaking pig?? YEP!! Hang tough sister…you will not get fat! Oh and if you do come up with the at-home lipo kit, I’ll invest!
Susan,
That really bites. Hang in there.
Chad
Oh no!!
Hope you heal quickly!!
Hey Susan,
Sorry to hear this but you’ll be OK… you can always come hang out in OHio! π
Oh man! That stinks….Hopefully the next six weeks will just fly by….
yikes, heal soon!
see if you can find a spin class at a local gym or borrow a bike. both are great and low impact. they’ll keep your lungs and legs strong.
and pool running is great too – just like everyone above mentioned.
Bugger!
Enjoy being Stationary Susan for the next six weeks. It’ll be over in a flash π
Well, you know you have my sympathies. Hey, I lost weight while recovering from my stress fractures, so don’t think you won’t too. Lack of exercise often translates to lack of appetite. And you get to start fresh with the training — no aches, no funky toenails, no annoying chafing marks.
I’m glad you went to the Doc, but sorry about your ankle. I know when I sprained my ankle I tried cross training, such as swimming and it hurt, bad, but elliptical was okay. Just enjoy the spring weather and look forward to training for Chicago.
Hola!! Wow, you have been busy!! How is the house, dogs, and running? I have totally lost touch with the running world!! Pregnancy does that I guess. I am sorry to hear about your ankle!! Maybe we can go for a run some time!! Now that, in about 4-5 more weeks, I can run again!! I am so excited to start again!! Hey, check out our J man!! Good luck with the recovery!! I miss you, friend!!
Glad to hear you got your ankle checked over. Sorry it is putting you up for 6 weeks, but if you do that, you will be ready to start training for Chicago!
i’m seconding (or maybe thirding) the vote for pool running. i injured my foot (thought it was a stress fracture) right at the beginning of my ironman training in january. i did pool running for six weeks and it definitely kept up my aerobic fitness until i could start running again.
here’s some info if you’re interested…

feel better!
Don’t do what I did Susan, by rejecting all external and internal sense and not do anything while you can’t run. I did get very unfit and fat. To be honest. Not to scare you – but I wish someone had scared me into some activity instead of wallowing in self pity all those months!
Can anyone say “I want a second opinion?” I like chiropractors for that. Rest if you must then… Run Good!
So sorry to hear about your stress fracture. Take it easy and I’m sure you’ll be back in no time. It’s hard to do a whole lotta nothin’ when you’re used to training so much. all the best.
Dang, I hate that news (I feel your pain). Be kind to your body when it comes to sympathy food (easy for me to say, I know).
Sorry about the diagnoses but youβre going to be rich from your lipo-kit!
Let me know about your do-it-yourself lipo kit. I’ll try it out on my stomach π
I’m sorry about your injury. But you shall over come π
hope you are back on track soon Susan
