It’s been a long time since I’ve set my alarm to wake up at 4:00 AM, so long in fact that I didn’t have a lot of faith that I would actually be able to wake and/or run so early. But I did and I’m glad.
On the way there I saw a shooting star and it reminded me why I so love running early in the mornings: it’s dark, peaceful, cooler, and you really don’t need a designated place to pee – any old moonlit corner will do.
I met up with Massoman at 5:30 to run the 7 miles Coach Thin Trade had planned for me. “Ease your way back into running and Galloway”, he said, “and try running miles 6 and 7 without stopping”. My first reaction was that that sounded pretty ridiculous. But I gave it a try and my run was slow, but solid, and surprisingly, I only stopped a few times for water breaks since I haven’t mastered the swallow/run thing yet. I did walk in the last half-mile, not because my legs weren’t strong enough, but because the sun came up earlier than I anticipated and was blazing me right into my poor little unprotected eyes giving me one heck of headache.
It’s been nearly an hour and no swelling, no pain. I foresee some speed work and a little plyometric leg torture in my future.

Yea for you; and thank you Massoman. You can run however slow you want. Just work your way back. It’s a long way to Chicago (about 450 miles running plus air flight).
Great news Susan! Just take it easy & don’t rush into that crazy horrid speed work stuff too quickly
really weird but for a while there I was stuck on your treadmill photo. I discovered yesterday that you had another link because I click one of your comment on some elses blog.
Any way glad to see you are back on track and good luck with your training
Good for you, and I see many more successful runs in your future.
Awesome job. Small victories are huge!
hooray indeed for you susan. i’ll all about the small victories myself these days. they’ll add up to big ones soon enough. i’m with you all the way!
getting up at 4am makes you a runner by default
Good stuff Susan. I’d say your pacing was spot-on.
I tend to agree with Jen… keep with the steady runs for 3 or 4 weeks before brining in some faster work.
Hi Susan – in answer to your question, I just ran that chart in excel. Took about 5 mins. If you email me your #s, I’ll do one for you if you like…
Congratulations! Baby steps!
so how you wearing your hair?
Nice one – 4.00am now that’s an early run!
Hip hip horray… sheeeeeeeeee’s Baaaaaack!
kinda makes me jealous that I slept in this morning…okay…not such much!
It may not be the best time for a running meme…but I tagged you any ways ‘cuz I know you will have interesting answers.
Way to get your arse out of bed that early. I have been having difficulty with that as well. Maybe you will provide some inspiration for me.
where is massoman?
gude gurl.
Wow, 4am! Holy smokes. How do you last the rest of the day? I could probably do a 4am run but I would be one grumpy camper come 8pm.
