Not quite ready, but contemplating 2009

Call me a scrooge, but I’m always glad when the holidays are over. Don’t get me wrong, I love spending time with my family and friends, but I am always so ready to get back to regular schedule. Particularly one that does not involve shoveling cheese, fudge and wine into my mouth as I spread peace and goodwill to the world.

My race schedule for 2009 has neither peace or goodwill, because I have yet to put together a race schedule. Although, I am pretty sure, but not totally, that I will not run any marathons in 2009. I’ve run one or two marathons every year since 2004, but today, I’d rather poke my eye out than run another marathon. Bite me; I’m still traumatized by my Chicago Marathon experience. (Shut up David)

With that in mind, I’ve decided to focus on some shorter races – I’m thinking 1ks. Okay, maybe 5ks 10ks and some halves. And seriously focus on the no muffin top plan – that would be extra nice. I don’t know about you, but losing weight is impossible for me when I’m marathon training because I’m hungry all the time. And since I’m always hungry, I indulge myself with the justification that since I’m training for a marathon I deserve 4 pieces of chocolate cake for dessert. And I do. But not really. Sometimes the hungry gets so bad even the dog food smells good. And when I get up in the middle of the night to pee, I start thinking about leftovers in the fridge. See, marathons are unhealthy. I’m even hungry just thinking about marathon training. Must find cheese.

I know this about myself: I must have a plan and routine in order to workout. I’m lazy that way. So a plan is underway, it’s just not ready yet. But I’m open to suggestions.

I think 1/2 Marys are a good goal. I’m going to run at least three this year…and work on improving my time. I didn’t lose any weight when I trained for a marathon last year either (GAH!)

Susan, losing weight for running is a bad plan!.You training a lot of fitness, i see the video and i think it is to much for you.
And mussels are haevy!.
When you train for a marathon, you dont need to train your legs ore feet!.

When you training slow running(slow make’s fast) and do not so much fitness(your not in the navy ;-) than you can run easy the marathon in 4:30 houre…..
Don’t look for your weight you can feel how your body is feeling..

And hungry, oké, eat than fruit and Grains biscuits naturel(sorry only in dutch!) http://www.lu.nl/TimeOut/products.asp?id=68&rnd=12%2F28%2F2008+12%3A19%3A04+AM

And a good breakfast(no fat) whit grain brauwn bread is important to start the day!.

Forget Chicago and learn about it and don’t think to much!!!!!.

You can run the marathon in 4:30 hour and go for it you can do it.
Goodluck.
(Sorry for my bad english).

I was thinking about a goals for 09 post … this is it … I’ll just refer everyone here. Marathon training (ick) does not equal weight loss – probably because I start carb loading day one of training. I like the 1ks, that sounds doable!

I’m with Alice. I’ve got three half marathons planned this year and the goal is to run each one stronger than the last. Hey, this way not only can you walk the next day but you beat everybody to the post-run party!

Good luck with achieving your goals for 2009.

Damn. Should have come here before registering for my first marathon.

I’m looking for some 1ks in my area….do you think you’d come to northern california for such an event? I mean, if you’d go to Chicago for a marathon, surely a quick trip to Cali can be managed for the all-important 1k? I’ll get back to you. We can do it!!! :P

I’m right there with you on the “yay” for the end of holidays. I *love* them, and also love taking down the decs and getting back to normal (no cheese!).

I can’t wait to see your plan, and hopefully have it inspire my own…

It’s all my fault. I should have never left you in Chinatown.

Mia, that is the smartest thing I’ve ever heard . . .

and David, reverse psychology doesn’t work on me. Well, maybe sometimes.

Susan, sorry for my respons, I do not mean it so hard and i now that you training so much for the marathon!.
I real think that you can do it and thats makes a marathon runner so special…
I now that run a marathon is a lot of training and good looking for your healt, but 50% is in your head when you run a marathon, it can makes you or brake you, and thats what only can happens by a marathon!!!.
Sorry, and when you think that a marathon is nothing for you?, stop than whit the marathon.

5/10k racing is a good plan – it will suit your physiology better than ‘thons – you’re very fast-twitch Susan! No need for 3-week taper and 3-week recoveries where the weight tends to go on either.

I’ll email some suggestions :)

OK, how about the Mardi Gras half marathon for the 1st race of 2009? February 1. I’m already signed up. By all accounts, it’s one of the flattest, fastest, most well-organized and fun races in the country. Would love to see you out there!

Also … consider one of the Ragnar Relays. I did the Texas one and am doing the California one in April. They are lots of fun – I think you would absolutely love them.

That is too funny about the eating. Even your muffin reference implies food….. You’ll also have more time to cross-train and increase your lean muscle mass.

16 fe-lady December 29, 2008 at 7:38 pm

plans and goals…a good thing, yes.
best to you and family in ’09. Sis Amy too…never meant to be mean, just came across “wrong”. sorry.

17 jeanne December 29, 2008 at 10:41 pm

you just HAD to mention cheese, didn’t you?? hang on a minute….OK, back. yum.

heh, you said “spreading”. that’s funny because that’s what my a$$ has been doing.

i’m in for the 1k.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

The Half Mary is the world’s most perfect race. Long enough to be a challenge but not so long as to torture. The 5Ks and 10Ks serve to get your speed work going and the Half Mary gives you endurance. Bliss.

As for the food thing – you have to remember to drink Miso soup and tea when you are hungry and that’s really hard to do. Frozen grapes are good, too. Sweet enough to satisfy. Chocolate cake = bad. bad, bad, bad. You hate chocolate cake…. you are getting sleepy….

If you decide on a full try to the new Illinois marathon in Urbana-Champaign. First year, flat, Dick Beardsley and Bart Yasso, good music and food. April 11. http://www.illinoismarathon.com/
