Roller Derby

by Runner Susan on January 5, 2009

in The Dark Side

I can’t believe it’s been over a month since I’ve posted any videos. I think my bleakness is finally lifting.

Anyway, I’ve been telling my friend Zoë about how my favorite thing to do on the bike is fall over. I’m an out-of-balanced freak like that. And Zoë had just the cure, a Roller Derby party.

Don’t laugh too hard; this is my first attempt at rolling. It is so much harder than it looks. Except when Zoë does it – she rolls like pro. You’d think she was like some kind of state mountain biking champion or something.

Watch them independently, then press play and watch both the videos at the same time. It’s hysterical.

Cool. I had no idea they made a device like that.

That is freakin’ cool! I have never seen anything like that!

Zoe needs some commentary coaching from Cindy. We are the Internet People!

Why do you have to cycle three times as fast as Zoe to do the same thing (or worse/fall over)?

Where are the paper plates?

My husband would throw my bike on the driveway and run over it if he saw me on a trainer in our kitchen.

Skillz. I like to watch mind numbing online episodes and movies while I ride on the trainer…rollers would never work. Kudos to you- looks like you got the hang of it!

You are a rock star! The very idea of rollers scares the bejebus out of me.

The concentration!

Are you effing kidding me? You’ve got balls for even trying that thing!!! I’d kill myself on rollers. Get yourself a fluid or mag trainer…WAY safer. But probably not as fun to post videos of. :)

A bunny hop?

That is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen. Want. One.

You did well! Unbelievable in fact. I know how hard it is – a mate had some rollers set up on his balcony – VERY scary!

Now, what did Zoë say her ultimate goal was? The music was too loud for her foreign accent.

Suz,
Very good! Those counters seem really close.

Look at how fast your legs were spinning on that thing! It looks pretty hard to do, though Zoe seems to have a knack for it. You will too, soon.

Nice work, Su. Rollers are hard, but once you get the hang of it, they are a good workout. At least you have to concentrate, so they aren’t as boring as just droning on the trainer…. Good girl.

ARRRGH! Ticked I can’t see the vid at work! Can’t believe I’m missing out on Susan on rollers!

I’ve been riding for 20 years and I have never once ridden rollers…on purpose. Been around them a ton, but they’re just not for me.

Can you believe our team “captian” leads our indoor trainer classes while he’s riding rollers? One-legged drills and all.

Can’t believe you gave it a shot and apparantly did well. You should be proud. Plenty of road weenies everywhere don’t have the courage to even try.

Guess It’s time to finally buy some rollers. My wallet hates you now.

As for the kitchen comment….they’re in the kitchen so that you have something to grab on to in order to help balance when you start.

Another favorite place is to set them up in a doorway in order to allow the rider to grab the door jamb for support when needed. Also helps keep you from face planting if you ride off of them to the side – jamb stops you.

…and FWIW if I came home to my wife on rollers in the kitchen….well…let’s just say I wouldn’t be responsible for my actions. In a good way.

OK. Watched the movies finally. Zoe is good. Nice skilz.

Watching Susan…:) I still can’t believe you did it. A+! Your upper body is locked like you’re going to die – relax. The look on your face is like you’re about to die. Relax.

…..and your cadence – slow it down and it will be easier to balance. Watch Zoe’s cadence compared to yours. – bigger gear….slower cadence…wheels spin faster….more forces holding you up and in balance.

FWIW. Thanks for enduring my critique.
