only 10 lbs?? Amateur.

clipping out w/o thought = awesome!!! i've forgotten what a bike is actually for. I finally broke down and bought a trainer. Now I must set it up. Nothing is easy is it?

When you said newtons, of course i thought fig. um. must go eat.

The left side of my brain is saying everything Kelly did. Exercise does very little for weight loss (unless you ride/run a zillion kilometres a week).

I can't wait to hear how the Newtons go. Here's hoping they'll be magical fast shoes. Short races *are* good. Learn how to run fast in short races and marathons become easier because they don't take so bloody long!

Thanks for the 20 :)

I too have blogged at 2 am. I think you did pretty well.

Whether you run a marathon this year or just shorter races, you will run. That's great. YOU are great.

I had my annual exam last week (we won't go into that) and I was my usual weight. I should be happy, I've been in the same 5 pound range for 15 years now. HOWEVER, like RunnerSusan, I have a lot of muscle and even though I don't even consider myself overweight I'm in that category on the BMI index. I HATE that thing. If you have ANY muscle mass at all it is completely off. I'm very realistic, I know I could lose 5 pounds, but 10 is pushing it. I'm just about 5'10" with "workhorse legs" as my loving brother used to always tell me (well, still does) and there is NO WAY IN HELL I'll ever be 145 or even 150! Hell, I'd have to starve myself to do that, not just give up my ice cream. :) Sooo, after that venting, Susan, STAY AWAY FROM THE SCALE! It means nothing! What matters is the waist of your favorite jeans and how they feel!
I feel better now...

YAY! I'm so glad you ran. I want you still to be Runner Susan, not cycling Susan (gee, I play nice, don't I?). And it must be tough from running so many full marathons to something shorter, but (take it from a dedicated half'er) half-marathons are great!!!!

Did you see that White Rock has started a spring half marathon - in March?

p.s.: Those pounds are all muscle, no question!

R. Susan,

Have you noticed how they always say, "Diet and exercise is the key to weight loss"? It's never said "Exercise and diet...". Exercise without diet will not produce weight loss in my opinion. I gained 2-3 pounds over the holidays feasting even though I was running everyday. I started weighing myself last fall several times/week and it's amazing how I'm more focused about what I shove in my mouth. You seem to have the exercise part down-pat. Focus more on what you shove in your mouth. Google "Hacker's Diet" for an intersting and motivating read. Good luck with the belly, it can go away. Yes you can!

That clipping out thing is not insignificant - it's great! It means you are on the way to enjoying your bike instead of being terrified by it.

The heck with a marathon - time to sign up for a sprint distance triathlon and find a swim coach. You are ready!

+1 - It's muscle. I say forget the fall marathon. It will mess up your whole cycling season. :)

Srsly though...do you realize that the field size of entry level women's bicycle races is usually in the single digits in size?

Gotta like them odds....

Go for the marathon!, you can do it.
And weight is not that importend, you can feel it in your body..
In Dutch we say "elk pondje gaat door het mondje"!.
Each pound go's through the mouth ;-)...

I recently got on the scales and had the same horror. I just ordered a workbook that someone recommended to help me eat well and not just eat a lot. You at least have muscle to account for some of the climb. I've just got sloggy arms and saggy boobs and a big ol' beer belly, even though I don't drink beer.
